Velasquez became the husband of the daughter of his master and gave support for his family through concentrating on creating paintings with religious themes for churches and taverns.

Diego Velasquez’s career was marked by plenty of masterpieces of amazing works in the realistic style which earned him a lot of attention; something that not a lot of painters enjoyed during his time. One of most famous paintings that came alive under his brush was The Surrender of Breda which he painted after meeting the great Marques de Spinola; Spinola was in awe after seeing the details of The Surrender of Breda, wondering at Diego Velasquez’s skill to communicate such emotions and realism through his brush strokes. Another piece which marked Velasquez’s style was the Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour which is, at the moment, considered to be one of the most admired paintings in the world; this is also a painting done in the realist style and the theme had a bit of a political color to it.
