Stay In Paris And Bruges Hotels For An Insight Into World War History
It’s important to remember the atrocities of WWI to understand the history of our nation. Discover the stories of the First World War Battlefields of the Somme and Flanders, near a number of Bruges hotels. Through visits to original ruins, cemeteries, and battlefields, the tragedy and human sacrifice of the First World War comes to life.
Around Ypres, there are many cemeteries and memorials, which remember those soldiers who lost their lives. Be sure to go to the ‘Last Post Ceremony’ in Ypres where each night, at 8pm the Last Post is played at the Menin Gate. which commemorates the men who were never found. Don’t leave this area without visiting the Battlefield of Flanders to see the site where over a quarter of a million British soldiers lost their lives.
Make sure you go to the Flanders Fields museum to give you a deeper insight into the relevance of the battlefield during WWI. A visit to this museum is more like an experience, which gives you a deeper understanding of what daily life was like during the war. It can be quite a difficult day that may have a profound impact on you.
The Wellington quarries at Arras offer underground tunnels and chambers used by the British Army during the battle of Arras in 1917, and dug for them by the New Zealand Tunnellers. The existing network is of remarkable length and excellent condition. These undergrounds were also used by the British during World War One to install a small hospital.
Paris was at the forefront of the war effort, having been spared a German invasion by the French and British victory at the First Battle of the Marne in 1914. You’ll find Paris hotels close to many of the memorials in the centre of the city, so be sure to go to one of these to remember the dead.
