Student Receives Tuition Help From Local Charties
There once was a very proud mother of a musical prodigy. Her daughter was accepted to Berklee School of Music, one of the finest such educational facilities in the U.S. The only problem was the money. Berklee is not a cheap school. Even with a scholarship and such standard financial aid as the Pell and other grants, it looked like the daughter would have to go deep in debt with college loans in order to go to Berklee.
But the mother was resourceful. She knew that there were other sources of financial aid out there than the usual routes. As reported by the magazine Black Collegian, the mother eventually raised up an incredible additional $21,000 towards her daughter’s tuition, primarily through appealing to church and other social clubs.
Friendly societies have been around for quite some time. One of them, the Oddfellows Club, can trace its roots back to 17th Century England. Yes, they can be seen riding around in tiny motor cars wearing fezzes like the Shriners, yet there is a very serious reason why they do that. An incredible number of these organizations are designed to do charity work, and putting kids into colleges happen to be one of their favorite forms of charity.
The one thing someone who’d like to explore this type of funding should understand and that is that each group has its own set of guidelines and provisos. Probably the biggest is that each society is divided into local clubs, and it’s best to work with said local chapter. If the scholarship or grant happens to be administered through a central office, they will point you that way. Another way to get an edge is to have a member of your family or a very close friend belongs to that chapter.
Next, many of these clubs target their scholarship programs towards a specific career. For instance, the Oddfellows have one grant program specifically for nurses. The Rotary Club helps students studying other languages by actually paying to send them to other countries for six or so months.
After this, each club might have their own particular rules regarding who they give the money to, and what needs to be done. Some may be as simple as writing an essay, others might require a certain amount of public work, and all may require FASFA forms. Keep this in mind when you apply.
There are several ways to find these organizations and other online college course opportunities. The easiest is to get on a search engine and do some researching, preferably keeping where one lives in mind. Another way to find them is to simply pick up a copy of the Yellow Pages and start dialing. Finally, civil centers, such as your local City Hall, are a good way to find them.
What one should always consider when approaching these organizations is that one of their main reasons to exist is to do local charitable work. The mother of the Berklee student remembered this when she approached them. As one can see by her results, utilizing scholarships online resource helped her daughter’s education considerably.
