Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast – Home to William Pettigrew’s 19th Century Timber Operation
The first settler in Mooloolaba was a gentleman by the name of William Pettigrew. Pettigrew sniffed an opportunity to create a timber supply operation despite the fact that the area was not even mapped properly nevermind have any infastructure to facilitate movement of goods, this created a small community of people working in his business to be established. Pettigrew set about creating a very substantial timber operation at his initial base at the mouth of the Mooloolah river, where he brought timber from Cotton tree and Buderim to then send on to his state of the art processing mill in Brisbane via the wharf he constructed on the river. He soon branched out into a DIY type store for the settlers that grew in numbers to the area over the next few years, in partnership with James Low.
The Mooloolah river came to be the preferred shipping line for Pettigrew and other local businesses operating in the Maroochy district as Point Cartwright which divides Mooloolaba from Buddina, provided an extra level of protection from the ocean. He created a steam boat operation designed to transport his unprocessed wood to the sawmill in Brisbane along with other commercial fare including passsengers. A new railway line was created in 1891 that went to Yandina, this turned Pettigrew’s attention to the time he could save by moving his timber by rail to Brisbane. So in 1891 he decided that this new form of transport was the future and moved his operation to Maroochydore. His relocation as well as the creation of the North coast railway would seem to be the initial reasons behind the establishment of the city of Maroochydore as the regional hub of manufacturing and commerce.
Meanwhile the area known as Mooloolah heads(Mooloolaba) started to establish itself as a regional food producer mainly through fruit,vegetables and fish, and there seemed to be an opportunity to establish the area as a township. The land around the mouth of the Mooloolah river changed hands around the turn of the century but nothing was done with it until Thomas O’ Connor came along and bought the parcel, surveyed it and established Mooloolaba by selling blocks of land to new settlers initially along what we now know as main beach in 1921. In 1919 the Moololaba Surf club had been established in an old sugar warehouse to raise funds for swimming protection, this allowed the holidaymaking tradition to evolve and grow as the beauty of the area and the practical nature of lifesavers in evidence encourraged people to use the area for breaks as well as form the early establishment of the concept of a holiday home investment. Mooloolaba now thrives on tourism built from the ground up by William Pettigrew’s logging station.
