how has the “body” in art changed in today’s art world compared to e.g. Renaissance or impressionist art?
how has the human body(when used in art) changed throughout history? what is it like compared to renaissance or impressionist art?
Sounds like someone needs to spend a little more time paying attention in class. But I’ll suppose this is a real question from someone who just wants to know, and I’ll just offer some starting points into this vast topic.
Here are three ways, or angles, of considering the body’s representation over the history of art: proportion, purpose, and media.
What do I mean by proportion? Take a look at the stick drawings in the first paintings known to man. Then study the small and disproportioned infant christ figures circa 1400-1600. Also, one could study the actual proportions of the bodies chosen as subject matter. From classical cherubic to contemporary anorexic (let us not forget that although we might do without or disagree with fashion models, they are indeed photographed, and that photography is an art form).
I’m not going to get into impressionist representations of the human body. Just take a look at impressionist art work and you should form your own ideas very quickly.
Purpose. Well, this opens the larger ongoing debate over the purpose of art in the first place, but we should consider what purpose the images of those stick-like figures in the cave may have served compared to, say, commissioned portraits of royalty (remembrance via semi-immortal representation on canvas), or commissioned religious paintings (instruction and indoctrination), etc. Also, does one consider the erotic/pornographic aspects of representative human form in this discussion? If so, okay, then another purpose this work might serve is “titillation” or animal excitement. Difficult to say whether or not those stick-like drawings sexually aroused our early artists, but maybe they did, right?
Media. From ink made of berries to oils on canvas to high definition projected film and digital gloss photography, the actual manner of (re)presenting the human form has evolved extensively.
