Indian modern art paintings- a class apart
In the immortal words of the legendary Leonardo da Vinci, ‘painting is poetry that is seen’ and it is true that a beautiful piece of art can touch the mind and the heart like nothing else. The colors, moods and feelings of a beautiful painting transmit itself to the observer and Indian modern art paintings are a class apart. India has traditionally been the center of at and craft and right from the ancient cave paintings to the miniature Mughal paintings and to Indian modern art paintings, India is a treasure trove all styles of paintings.
It is no wonder that Indian modern art paintings have become so world renowned and command such tremendous respect in the art world across the globe that they are fetching astronomical prices from discerning collectors. Modern Indian artists have done a good job of combining elements from the traditional past while portraying a modern approach in keeping with the current times. European elements have largely influenced Indian modern art paintings but the essence of these paintings remains essentially Indian harking back to its roots of traditional art and iconography. Raja Ravi Verma, Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranarth Tagore, Jamini Roy, MF Hussain, S.H. Raza, Jogen Chodhury, F.N. Souza, Alok Bal, Subodh Gupta, Atul Dodiya, Amrita Shergill and Sudhanshu Sutar are some of the Indian artists who have helped put Indian modern art paintings on the international map. Indian mythological and rural scenes have been beautifully captured by Raja Ravi Verma.
The prolific output of Rabindranath Tagore is astounding considering he picked up a paint brush only in is 60s and his ability to synchronize and balance various shapes and landscapes lend an almost ethereal quality to his paintings. His works are highly valued and are a national treasure. Abanindranarth Tagore’s works closely follow his illustrious Uncle Rabindranath Tagore’s works but Abanindranath’s style has been described as ‘expression without parallel’.
Although both European and Indian influences are evident in Amrita Shergill’s works, the heart of her oils remain quintessentially Indian. The linear lines of MF Hussain so impressed the art world that his works are collectors’ items and command a huge amount of money.
