A Quick Look on Flamenco and Spain’s Music
Perceived as the basic form of art, music uses sound as its medium; harmony, rhythm, tempo, pitch, and melody are fundamentals of music. Music has different forms, faces, and purposes in many countries and although music may be utilized in varying methods, the fact still remains that it is an important part of cultures all over the world.
The musical practice of Spain is one of the richest in the world because of the many different influences that it has; it’s not unlike how the architectural trends in the country had been greatly influenced by different cultures throughout history. Spain’s music is generally heavily influenced by Roman and Greek music and later on by other influences brought about by the Visigoths, Jews, and Moors who have communicated with the locals of Spain. Because Spain’s geography had also changed her beginning, it’s only natural that each region of Spain offers a different variety or distinct music and dance culture; it would be more pleasurable for you to study this if you had a background on Spanish language and culture which can be given by short courses like those in Rocket Spanish websites. A popular music that’s from Spain is Flamenco which several people believe is widely known throughout Spain. Further knowledge of Flamenco, however, will present that it had a troubled past in its own country. Most people have no idea that Flamenco was not really accepted as a popular music and dance form before, and a lot of the information found about the Flamenco can be explained by by its troubled history.
Flamenco’s one of a kind dance, rhythm and music has captivated the eyes of a number of cultures worldwide even to this day. The Flamenco’s swift, sweeping actions and quick foot work has been used by several dance cultures worldwide. The art form kept on improving even though it was largely ignored by neighbouring regions.
Flamenco’s roots can be traced back to Gypsies who have traveled through or stayed in the Andalusian areas during those times; this region was also populated by Jews, Moors, and other persecuted and discriminated groups. Other studies have resulted have brought historians to regard that Flamenco is a mix of gypsy dance and the descendant of Moorish music during the 8th century until the 17th century; in addition, experts also consider that part from the gypsy and Moorish influence, Byzantine church music, and music of Indi and Egypt played an essential part in shaping Flamenco. It’s not surprising that the historians didn’t really make an effort to study and record the nuances that illustrate the beginnings and the development of Flamenco as an art form. Unfortunately, most of the people from the Andalusian regions were of persecuted lineages, they were also mostly illiterate so they had no method on putting into writing their own cultural tradition for posterity; most of the history of Flamenco has been lost and greatly altered because it had only been passed on through oral tradition.
Until today, much of the ancestry of the Flamenco is still shrouded in mystery. Nonetheless, no one can erase the reality that Flamenco has a major role on the dance culture all across the world.
