Riding Position Importance?
I have a few questions I need help with:
1. Why is equitation important?
2. Why should an amateur or performance rider work on their equitation if they don’t show in equitation classes?
3. How do you get riders to think of equitation as not just a division with stiff, posing statues but as the art of riding?
equitation is not just a class where you do a pattern like a robot with a stiff body and hold your legs in a certain position.
when you ride you want to be effective,
these guidelines for “proper” equitation are there because when you ride that way you are being the most effective rider you can be.
Proper equitation is important because not only will you be more comfortable on the horse but the horse will be more comfortable with you on its back and it will perform better.
It is easier for a horse to do the maneuvers we ask it to do if we are not off balance or sliding around or leaning forward etc.
like i mentioned earlier the point of equitation is not just looking pretty when you ride but riding effectively so that the horse looks good as well.
that is why someone who rides strictly in performance classes should still have good eq. (and most of them do) because your horse is simply going to perform better and it will just be a more pleasant picture going around the ring.
as riders we never want to distract from out horses and having hideous (or even just poor) equitation in a class distracts the judges eye from our horses.
in a performance or pleasure class the judge is looking at the horse and its way of going and as riders we want to do every to enhance our horses movement and riding improperly will hinder it.
