All About Absinthe The Fairy
Green Fairy or La Fee Verte Absinthe is equally popular
Absinthe or La Fee Verte is a alcoholic drink that was once more popular than wine. Poplular and controversial at the same time it was initially developed as a tonic in the 18th century.
45 to 75% Alcohol by volume makes Absinthe an anise flavored spirit incredibly strong. The emerald green color gives it the name “Green Fairy” in English and “La Fee Verte” in French. Liquor made from herbs it is also distilled. The three main herbs tend to be wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium), green aniseed and fennel (fennell). The very famous Pernod Absinthe recipe was produced using herbs like hyssop, star anise, juniper, veronica, lemon balm, nutmeg, and dittany Henri-Louis Pernod was also the first person to commercially distill Absinthe. Calamus, another ingredient used by some manufacturers along with wormwood and nutmeg were thought to be psychoactive. When water is poured over the sugar on the perforated Absinthe spoon the Absinthe clouds this happens due to the oil extract from the herbs. Absinthe clouds or louches due to the presence on water insoluble oils.

Absinthe famously inspired writers and artists who were associated with the Bohemian culture of the old Montmartre area in Paris. The Absinthe admiration society of greats included Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Hemingway and many others. Inspiration and genius was the gift of Absinthe and many artists and writers subscribed to this line of thinking. Greative greats like Picasso and Van Gogh even featured Absinthe and Absinthe drinkers in their painitngs.

Prohibition campaigners were on the lookout for some excuse and they found it readily in Absinthe’s association with Bohemian sect, old Montmartre and Moulin Rouge. The prohibition campaigners linked Absinthe to murders, marital discord, madness, and alcohol addiciton and this made it easy for them to get it banned in France in the year 1915. It remained legal in the UK, Portugal, Spain, and the Czech republic while other countries banned it.
Drinking the Green Fairy causes psychedelic effects and thujone which is present in wormwood was blamed for it. Thujone was thought to be similar to THC in cannabis. However Absinthe is mainly alcohol, ethanol, and therefore only contains minute quanitities of thujone. Research has proved it conclusively that the high alcohol content is more dangerous than the thujone content in Absinthe, in fact Absinthe is as safe as any other drink with high level of alcohol. Any number of studies and articles have been written on the subject. Absinthe is a very strong drink, in fact it is two times stronger than whisky and vodka and hence care and moderation are necessary to derive pleasure.
