Jim Nantz offended by Tiger Woods swearing on Masters telecast
Jim Nantz made clear just how offended he was by Tiger Woods’ swearing during last weekend’s Masters telecast – on live TV – after the besieged recovering sex addict shanked some shots. Nantz, who called the tournament for CBS, expressed his outrage on the air during a New York sports talk radio show Monday.

Jim Nantz, who is a veteran announcer who has called Super Bowls, Final Fours and several Master, publicly scolded the Tiger Woods swearing that took place during the third-round Masters telecast on Saturday. Following a lousy tee shot on the par-3 6th hole, Woods yelled, “Tiger Woods, you suck.” The shot didn’t crunch, landing about 70 feet away from the pin. Pushing it almost 20 feet past the hole and ending up with a bogey four, Woods clearly botched his next shot, a birdie putt. Vern Lundquist, who is Nantz’s broadcasting partner on the Masters telecast, said, “I don’t think he’s pleased,” which may just be the biggest understatement uttered this year by a sportscaster on the air.

Jim Nantz perhaps observed Woods on a later play with disgust, when he uttered an expression that many would probably say breached the sacred third commandment. Not a biggie? It was to Jim Nantz, who said on WFAN’s Mike Francesa Show “If I would have said that on the air, I would have been fired.” Nantz said Tiger Woods swearing wasn’t much of a bother in the past, but the fact that Tiger has pledged to make a change in his life after his serial adultery debacle made things very different for the Masters telecast this year.

With Jim Nantz announcing, moving on to the next hole Tiger Wood cursing filled the airwaves again after he shanked an approach on his way to another bogey!. A number of hacks like this would have most golfers dishing out fast cash to their hombres. However, Tiger Woods promised to demonstrate more respect to his fellow pros and their fans in February during a public apology for his prolific philandering. During the 2010 Masters, Woods managed to keep quiet for about 42 holes before the game claimed the better of him. Hoping for victory, Woods finished in fourth place, which indeed diminished his pay day. Victory was what winner Phil Mickelson took home, as well as a whopping $ 1.35 million. Woods, a paltry $ 330,000 – chump change to him Woods took home $ 333,000 – pocket money to him.

Although Jim Nantz may be upset over Tiger’s poor choice of words, the CBS announcer shares a modicum of kinship with Woods in other matters. He doesn’t make as much as Tiger, but he takes home about $ 7 million each year and will not be needing a pay day loan anytime soon. The 50-year-old announcer admitted last fall during legal proceedings to divorce wife of 26 years that he had been fooling around with a 29-year-old girlfriend he met promoting his book, “Always by my Side.”

Some people question the wisdom of using live microphones on Masters telecast. Often driving the average person crazy, many hyper-competitive feins are going after the big money with a game in play. The reaction to Tiger Woods swearing on the Masters telecast could perhaps inspire other pro athletes to follow the lesson of Los Angeles Lakers forward Kobe Bryan, who prefers to cuss refs out in Serbian. Bryant told the media that he learned how to cuss in languages of his teammates, Vladimir Radmanovic (Serbia), Sasha Vujacic (Slovenia) and Ronny Turiaf (France). “I’ve been cursing in French. French is really cool, because everything sounds good in French.”
