Kentucky Derby Contenders And Odds: Race Has A New Favorite
The list of Kentucky Derby contenders got shorter from the top Sunday as Eskenderaya, the favorite, was pulled by trainer Todd Pletcher from the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 1. The money now among the Kentucky Derby contenders is considered by horse expert Joe Drape of the New York Times to be last year’s two-year-old champion Lookin at Lucky, that was trained by the three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert. Eskenderaya’s exit marks the second year in a row the pre-race favorite has been scratched from the list of Kentucky Derby contenders because of a leg injury.
Contenders and odds of the Kentucky Derby
The final list of Kentucky Derby contenders will be established on Wednesday when the post positions are announced at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Derby contenders and odds, in a list that was posted Monday on sports-odds.com includes 38 horses that are considered to race probably. Before being scratched, Eskenderaya was at 2/1 odds. Sidney’s Candy was at 6/1. Awesome Act at 12/1, Lucky at 13/4, and Dublin is at 10/1. Prince William at 200/1 and Call shot at 150/1, they are longshots that Bets are hoping will get them extra cash.
Other odds and contenders for the Kentucky Derby
Other Kentucky Derby contenders in this year’s race trained by Pletcher include the Louisiana Derby winner, Mission Impazible (30/1); Super Saver (15/1), the Arkansas Derby runner-up; Rule (20/1), the third-place finisher in the Florida Derby; and Discreetly Mine (50/1),the Risen Star victor; . In a news conference Sunday, Pletcher said he may also consider entering Interactif (40/1) and the filly Devil May Care, a horse among the favorites to win the Kentucky Oaks to be run at Churchill Downs on Friday.
Kentucky Derby, bargains, big money
The Kentucky Derby contenders are a group of horses that earn their way into contention by payday cash. Out of about 30,000 to 40,000 thoroughbred horses born each year in North America, only 20 make the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The race brings together horses that are both extremely expensive investments and basement bargains. A list of Kentucky Derby Contenders and their price posted on downthestretchtheycome.com includes the aristocrat Dublin at $ 525,000 and the humble Setsuko, the Santa Anita Derby runner-up, at $ 10,000. Setsuko still went for that small price even though his grandfather, Pleasant Colony, won the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness.
