Tolkien Fans: Don’t you hate it when fantasy authors copy The Lord of the Rings?
Gosh, it makes me sick! Okay, there are some unavoidable things such as Wizards, Elves, and Goblins. You have those in every Faerie Tale. However, in The Wheel of Time – for example – you see an exact copy of the Ring Wraiths/Nazgul/Black Riders only with a different name. Those guys you see an awful lot in fantasy stories. Then, of course, there has to be the evil tyrant who wants to take over the world. In order to do that, he needs a certain magical object infested with the black arts of dark sorcery. However, the hero gets a hold of it first and has to destroy it, usually in a big bad mountain or a wannabe volcano. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I noticed that other authors (Terry Brooks speficially) copied Tolkien, the Father of Fantasy, big-time! But what about you?

Tolkein is the giant astride the fantasy world, he set certain standards and rules. So I am not bothered by the downright copies, some amuse and most I just ignore (I agree Brooks is especially laughable, but his Magic Kingdon For Sale/Sold! series entertains).
It has also made people treat their mythological backgrounds more seriously, whcih has helped and has given us goodies like The Fionovar Tapestry by Kay, so it isn’t all bad!
So let the lesser minds get on with it, let then get near the bar – if they can….
