Breast augmentation has been done successfully since the late 1950s. That means the breast enlargement science has been around and evolving for over 60 years. Implant types have included silicone gel implants, saline implants, polyurethane implants, sponge implants, oil fill iimplants, and more. Today only the saline and gel implants persist. Both of these are very safe. The saline and the gel both can and do break. When they break they need to be replaced. There is no automatic timetable to replace implants. If they are not broken, do not replace them. Although breast implantation – enlargement – augmentation has been appreciated by patients, it must be noted that breast enlargement and breast lift generates the number one cause of plastic surgery litigation in America. Patients expect perfection and certainly surgeons try to give it to them.
In choosing you breast enlargement surgeon choose a surgeon boarded by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and who is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. If he or she is not a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, go elsewhere. Obtain 4 consultation. It will be well worth it. Do not be impulsive. The surgeon should do the surgery frequently. This is not an easy surgery in all cases.
Choose a facility that is certified and make he surgeon prove the certification and give you a copy of the certificate.
Implants available include various types of gel and saline implants. Choose smooth surface implants always. Avoid the useless teardrop implant which is more trouble than it is worth and is more costly. Do not pay more for less. Talk to your surgeon. The gel implants cost the surgeon $1500 and the saline implants $500 a pair. Most pass the implants to the patients with no additional charge. I see the salines making a big comeback. I use both , but the gels definitely cause more capsule contracture. Talk to your surgeon. Some feel the gels feel more natural but this is not true if salines are maximally filled.
Incision can be axillary, under breast, periareolar, or belly button. Discuss the alternatives with your surgeon. I prefer the periareolar incision that defies detection. The inframammary incisions can be obvious and not attractive. The axillary incisions allow lateral drift. The umbilical incisions are simply a bad idea followed by a bad operation with flimsy implants and silly logic of dissection.
Capsule contracture is a forming a thick scar around the implants that results in firm cannon ball type feel and appearance.
Go under the muscle. Above the muscle results in too much capsule contracture.
Have surgery in a certified facility under the care of an MD aneathesiologist that cares for you while you are asleep.
After surgery go home under the care of a responsible caretaker.
In two weeks resume full activity. In five days return to work.
After 6 weeks forget you have implants and enjoy.
If some problem occurs call you surgeon. Have your breasts checked by you family doctor once yearly. Get mammograms as advised.
The alternative of fat transfer to breasts for enlargement is not a one time procedure but is a process of multiple operations and multiple years. It may work but ot is very early in the process at this time.
Breast implantation and enlargement does not cause breast disease or cancer. Breast implants do not cause any illness. Breast implants can have the problems listed of capsule contracture, assymetry, bottoming out, etc which can be addressed and corrected by yuir surgeon.
If interested in breast augmentation, seek a surgeon using the guidelines listed above. Certainly breast enlargement is appreciated by millions. Enjoy, it is a truly wonderful operation with generally great results.
