Online Graphic Design Degrees A Competitive Path For Artists
It’s one of the most pervasive professions in the country. Many times you don’t realize it, like Online Information Systems Degrees, is having an effect on the mass public, but it already has whenever you buy a can of soda or slow down at a stop sign. This is the world of the graphic designer.
By definition, the graphic designer is a commercial artist who specializes in creating marketing messages in one form or other. You see and unconsciously remember their work whenever you look at your cell phone or stop at a traffic light. Their work can also be seen on magazines, signs, turning on the TV or going on the Internet. Many work for advertising studios or are freelance.
At one time, the graphic designer worked much like a traditional artist, leaning over a drawing easel with pen, pencils, magic marker and lots of paper. As with just about everything, including Online Basic Computing Degrees, over the last two decades, the position was completely transformed by the computer. These days, a designer needs to know a number of graphic software as much as the t-square and triangle.
It’s not unheard of for young graphic designers to land their first job with only two years of school. At the same time, most recruiters prefer their new artists to have a full Bachelor’s of Arts degree. Another absolutely essential hiring tool is to develop a professional-looking portfolio, attractively displaying whatever work the applicant has already done. In fact, times are changing the portfolio, with many recruiting personnel looking for the work on disk as opposed to in a binder.
As it stands there are many fine on campus and online schools offering four year design programs, and Online IT Management Degrees. Recommended courses include the study of commercial art, printing techniques, and other production processes. Modern times also require courses in the latest computer graphic packages. From there, the degree can be rounded out by liberal arts or marketing courses.
These days a good designer also has subscriptions to the latest graphic publications and web sites. They need to do so to stay on top of the constantly changing trends. The top designers all know what’s hot today is quickly forgotten tomorrow, and these sources are a great way to stay on top.
Like most of the arts, this is not an easy field to break in to. According to the Bureau, there are over 286,000 graphic artists in the U.S. as of 2008. Growth in the field is about 13% (slightly above the national average) between now and 2018. This is due mainly to the need for designers in the World Wide Web. On the other hand, competition is extremely keen.
Still, if one has the talent and fortitude to stick it out, the rewards can be worth it. The average designer, working at a solid design or advertising studio, can make in the low $40,000 salary range while the top ones can go into the hundreds of thousands. At the same time, it’s a job that brings about an incredible amount of job satisfaction. After all, who wouldn’t want to say they were responsible for the design of the Campbell soup can or the Apple or IBM logo?
