So, You Want to Learn to Play Guitar?
If you are a Guitar Hero game player, you might be ready to actually learn to play a real guitar? Guitar Hero is a fun game to play, but it won’t help you learn to be a true guitar player. You might be thinking you would like to become a guitar player and get that same rush by playing the guitar or performing in a band.
Learning to play an instrument takes work – you don’t really get to “play” at it until you learn the basics and practice. Then, after you’ve learned to play some chords and you’ve learned a song or two, the fun starts. I know because I learned to play the guitar when I was ten years old! I learned to play some chords that you can use for many songs. That is a good way to start – you’ll feel that you accomplished something. For example, if you learn these chords: C, G, and D. You’ll find that those three chords will allow you to play many easy guitar songs.
Look up good information online about guitars (learn what the parts are called, learn about tuning and putting strings on a guitar). There are beginner lessons on videos that can teach about guitar chords.
How hard is it to learn a song?
When I learned to play guitar, I had a guitar teacher – and guitar books taught me songs and chords. But that was before the Internet (I know – a long time ago) and today there are so many other options to find guitar lessons for beginners. There are some good guitar lesson videos online. Some things never change – learning an easy song is a quick way to get started. After you learn one song, you’ll learn the next few songs faster and easier!
What kind of guitar should you have?
Lots of beginning guitar players start with an acoustic guitar and many start with what is considered a classical guitar. This article talks about kinds of guitars. A basic difference between those two types of guitars is the kind of strings – acoustic guitars have steel strings and classical (or folk) guitars have nylon strings. Those steel strings can really hurt your fingers – starting with nylon strings is much easier!
There are benefits to learning to play on either kind of guitar. Students who are definitely planning to play rock and roll usually start with electric guitar lessons. Decide what kind of music you want to play and get the right kind of guitar – or start with an acoustic guitar (they are good to learn to play guitar).
You will need to buy a guitar, but not a really cheap one. Make sure you hear the guitar played first. Ask for someone at the store to play something on any guitars you are thinking of buying. Or take a friend with you that knows about guitars. So, start learning your first guitar song. You will become your own guitar hero!
