The Ever Fashionable Dress
If there is a single item in your wardrobe that is essential then it is the ubiquitous little black dress. Wearing a simple black dress will never go out of fashion and is ideal for any occasion. You can. of course, ring the changes by accessorizing. You could add jacket, scarf and pumps for an attractive day or business look. Or you could add jewelry, high heeled shoes and long gloves for a great evening look.
There is no doubt that the little black dress is an essential item for your collection and ideally the simpler it is, the better. Don’t buy one that is too short or long. Don’t get one with details that may go out of fashion. Remember – keep it simple! If you’ve seen Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, she is a great model of an excellent black dress and how to wear it. The actual dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the movie was designed by Givenchy and she wore it with a large black hat, black earrings and court shoes. The finishing accessory was a pair of black sunglasses! The look of Audrey Hepburn in that dress is the height of chic and elegance.
The popularity of the little black dress began in the mid-1920s with Coco Chanel pictured in Vogue wearing a very simple calf-length black dress with very little decoration apart from a few diagonal lines. Vogue even said that the dress would be a standard for women with taste. The little black dress has even been abbreviated to LBD.
The great thing about an LBD is that it can suit all tastes, sizes and budgets. From $50 to thousands of dollars, from a size 2 upwards, there is always that ever perfect dress out there.
