A Simple Tradition Of The Couch
The Knole, the chaise longue, & the Chesterfield have proven to be a trio of memorable sofas which, in spite of seeing replacements planned over the course of generations, have become vastly popular with the couch purchasing public and the spark of inspiration for diverse upgraded versions.
Not heard of the Knole? It draws its name from an exquisite seat found in Kent’s Knole House, the domicile of the Sackvilles. It boasts substantial armrests, an upright back piece plus drop-down side panels which are kept together using braid. The structure conveys an aspect of fragility, forming an illusion that the Knole may collapse at any moment.
The drop-down side panels have a helpful role — a Knole where they have been lowered becomes a bed — rather, the intent was to make this possible when originally built, however, this is hardly ever done nowadays. The chaise longue may be described as a mixture of a couch and a bed, effectively an elegant long chair with armrests & a canted back not to mention leg support. Versions of the chaise longue draw their roots from Egyptian, Roman and South American civilizations, to say nothing of Chinese design.
The variation we tend to picture originated in the time of Louis XV, during which the careful employment of gilt, rich fabrics and mahogany created the appearance of true extravagance. A stylish updating would be the well-known Corbusier Chaise Longue, devised in the Twenties using tubular stainless steel and leather.
The Chesterfield couch calls forth the ambiance of stately homes, libraries or clubs, promising you peacefulness — and getting better as the leather ages. It is renowned for its stylishness and sense of sophistication. Scholars argue that the name is taken from the fourth Earl of Chesterfield. He possibly funded the first Chesterfield, giving a name to the iconic design ever since.
And what better legacy could he have conferred upon posterity?
