Beatles For Sale (1964) – An Underrated Beatles Album
Beatles For Sale is a frequently overlooked Beatles album (probably the most overlooked Beatles album.) I think that is a real shame because while it’s definitely not among The Beatles most important studio albums, it does have it’s good qualities and I do believe it is worth taking a close listen to.
In particular I think the 8 original Lennon/McCartney songs on the LP are very good (even if not as excellent as the original songs on A Hard Day’s Night and Help!) What really stands out about these eight originals is that they have a certain connected feeling with them. I think these songs would work fantastically as an EP. And this is actually how I listen to this album anyway, I just skip all of the covers, usually.
The album really starts off good with John Lennon’s “No Reply,” “I’m A Loser,” & “Baby’s In Black.” These are three good tracks and they all have this introspective mood that connects the tracks together well.
I’m not a huge fan of the covers on Beatles For Sale, unfortunately. Even more unfortunately is that the not so great covers make up nearly half of the record (6 of the 14 tracks are covers.) The only covers that I have any patience for are Chuck Berry’s “Rock & Roll Music” and Buddy Holly’s “Words of Love.” However even these are not nearly as good as the Lennon/McCartney originals.
The most popular of those Lennon/McCartney originals on the album is “Eight Days A Week” which is a track that both John and Paul dismissed and they never played it live. But despite that, it is a good tune. No, it’s not among their greatest songs, but it is catchy and the fade-in opening is extremely cool.
All of the songs on the album (both the originals and the covers) sound so much better on the 2009 digitally remastered discs than they did on the previous 1980s CDs. I highly recommend that you purchase The Beatles in Stereo Box Set and The Beatles Mono Box Set and give both the stereo and mono versions of this album a close listen before you go about your day.
I’m definitely not trying to say that Beatles For Sale Remastered is destined to be your favorite album, but I do believe you’ll find that’s far better than it’s reputation. I think it’s better than Please Please Me and With The Beatles.
