Pantera Makes Heavy Metal History

Pantera is the glam rock band formed by two Texan brothers, Vinnie Paul and Darrel Abbott. Pantera was the heavy metal band that is behind a number of successful albums, which are noted in the heavy metal history. Through their ten-year run, they have released the albums Metal Magic in 1983, Project Jungle in 1984, I am Night in 1985, Power Metal in 1988, Cowboys from Hell in 1990, Vulgar Display of Power in 1992, The Great Southern Trendkill in 1996 and Reinventing the Steel in 2000. Although the band’s first few albums earned cold reception, the band has made their mark in the heavy metal history with their struggles on the road to success.

Just like any of the world famous bands, Pantera also had its phase which led to a number of lineup changes. With Vinnie Paul as the drummer and Darrel Abbott as the main guitarist, a few personalities have made short careers during the band’s glory days. Initially, it was introduced with Tommy Bradford on the bass, Terry Glaze in rhythm guitar and vocals with Donny hart as the lead singer. Matt L’Amour has joined the crew for a short time being the lead vocalist. In 1982, Rex Brown joined on the bass guitar. The last and most successful lineup was that made in 1987, making Phil Anselmo the band’s lead vocalist in the next 16 years. The 1987 crew was even tagged as the successful foursome.

The band was greatly influenced by the style and image projected by the more popular bands Van Halen and Kiss. With that, the band struggled making their own identity and establishing an image that will make them more distinct from any other rising bands during those times. That was until they created the Grove Metal concept, which is simply described as thrash or a subgenre of thrash.

The band did not earn their huge popularity until 1990 with the release of their single “Cowboys from Hell”. With that, the band has won the hearts of millions of heavy metal fans. While the album received so little attention from the critics, it was a huge hit among the fans. Through the next years, the band will reach new heights. With millions of albums sold worldwide and widely popularized hits, they have given a new face to glam rockers through their 80s and 90s run. While popularity has given them recognition beyond their southern states base, their hugely successful albums and popularity have also caused their tumultuous road towards reaching the peak of their careers.

Just like in any famous band, Pantera experienced a lot of problems among its crews, particularly with Anselmo. Due to drug addiction and substance abuse, some of the members of the band suffered from drug overdose, causing their absence in rehearsals and even in their concert dates. Beyond substance abuse and drug addiction, more serious problems were dealt with Anselmo. Due to his drug addiction and fondness for heroin, his performance and attitude towards the band has significantly changed. Tension within the band builds up with his presence due to his unpredictable and often irrational behavior. Not only did his addiction hurt his personal reputation, it also managed to hurt the band.

While dealing with the problems among the band crew, the band still managed to create their own spin of heavy metal music. Thanks to their hugely successful albums and popular hits, they have left their own mark in the all heavy metal industry. With that, they have earned a spot to MTV’s top 5 All Heavy Metal Bands. VH1 list puts Pantera on their Number 45 slot of the top 100 list of the Greatest Hard Rock Artists.

As the problem among crew members escalate, the band decided to end their run in 2003 after failing to reunite from their 2001 break. There was even a story where Anselmo and Vinnie had the infamous war of words. After the band broke up, some of the crew members created their own gig. Sadly, one of them was accidentally killed by a mentally unstable fan. In 2004, while performing with his new band Damageplan in Columbus, Ohio, Darrel Abbott was shot and killed.

The on and off stage drama between the Pantera crew made them even more interesting to their fans. While they are mostly venerated for their music, their personal lives were equally interesting to their image and sound. With the number of recognitions given to the great 90s band Pantera, fans now enjoy the appreciated value of their Pantera merchandise.
