More Females Contemplating A Career In Medicine

Recently, American women have decided they are going to enter the medical field in record numbers, which could change how medicine is taught and practiced. In recent past, the division between male and female applicants was nearly equal. Cohorts of medical students were roughly 50-50 between men and women. The first reason is that feminism has altered the perception that people have, females in particular, of jobs that should be done by females. In fact, other career paths such as law and engineering are also seeing more women entering the arena than ever before. As more and more females are applying to medical programs, the programs themselves have been forced to admit more females to their schools. Anti Discrimination laws have also influenced the acceptance of women into medical programs.  The enforcement has been slow, but they have still helped this movement greatly.

 

Currently there is no information on dropout rates among women attending medical schools. There are old reports that can be looked at that show women dropped out more often than men, but for non-academic reasons. Females currently in medical school state that they believe that today, the number of females who quit is probably close to the same as the number of males who quit since females can better deal with being a minority now that the minority is larger than it used to be. There is power in numbers. As more and more women enter the field, they are banning together to demand discriminatory behaviors come to a stop. Some of them are subtle and some are more obvious.

 

For instance, a professor in a medical program decided to loosen up his students by telling them what he considered a joke. Inappropriate or sexist jokes and remarks not only make female students feel uncomfortable, but can make them feel as if they had wandered in unwanted to an all boys’ club. This joke is nothing compared to some of the other disgusting behavior women have had to put up with in medical school through the years, but it is still enough to show that they weren’t respected. However, thanks to the increased numbers of female applicants, those jokes – along with all the nude pictures and pinups that pop up in lecture slides and textbooks – may soon fall by the wayside. While the humor is demeaning, it is far from the largest issue being faced by female students at medical institutions.  There was recently a case where a female medical student was denied the opportunity to finish a physical examination of a male patient because completing the exam required exposing the genitals. Close by, her spouse, a man who was also a med student, was able to complete a gynecological examination on a female patient. There are other common problems, such as interviewers that almost always asked women about their family and marriage plans but never asked any of the men these questions. Women also had the hardships to contend with like lack of female faculty members to go to in times of need, as well as going up against the long believed notion that women were not capable of being trusted to practice medicine effectively, especially in certain specialty medicines or surgical procedures.

 

One woman faculty member who has asked to remain anonymous stated that she knows for a fact that women are often denied admission based on their answer to the marriage or career question. The answer the women gives is irrelevant because some male interviewers will bar the woman’s admission regardless. Say the lady tells the interviewer if she has children, she’ll have someone take care of them while she’s working, the interviewer will tell her it’s only right for her to take care of her own children. If a student states that she definitely has plans on getting married and having children, the interviewer would say that she lacks commitment to her profession.

 

The general consensus said that there is the feeling that female doctors are overall more sensitive than male doctors. Many people feel that this is just another stereotype. There is a student who was obliged to say that she has seen some very cold female students and some male students who were very sensitive, but thinks it’s more about who they were as opposed to their biological makeup.

 

One particular med school dean offered the opinion that overall, females have certain characteristics that are very appreciated in the medical field. Women are definitely socialized to be more open and perceptive regarding emotions. He mentioned that in the medical field, this is an advantage in terms of patient care. Aggressiveness is one trait mainly harbored by males, but there are females who possess this trait as well.
