The Dream Not Yet Attained
And he said, Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal”.
And he said, that giant of a man said, “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”.
And many people say now that much of that dream has been fulfilled. That may be true, but so much of it is still unfulfilled.
Consider the following facts:
- According to the US Census Bureau, The median household income for White (non Hispanic) Californians is $69,828. For Black Californians it is $43,397. Hispanic or Latino Americans fare little better at $46,535.
- According to the US Census Bureau, 7.5% of White Californians have less than a highschool diploma while 13.8 percent of African Americans do.
- According to the California Department of Education, 11.7% of White (non Hispanic) students drop out of high school while 32.9% of Black students do.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the recent national unemployment rate for White Americans was 8.7%. For Black Americans it was 16.1%.
- According to the US Census Bureau, 11.4 percent of White Californians live below the poverty level, while 20.4% of Black Californians do.
Can anyone seriously claim that these facts come even close to fulfilling the dream that Martin Luther King, Jr. expressed so eloquently at the Lincoln memorial in Washington, DC. If it could do so, I believe that beautiful sculpture of Abraham Lincoln would be crying as it looks out at America today. The tears would be streaming down Lincoln’s face at he looks out at the still vast inequalities in this nation. So many of us live such comfortable lives. To often we simply ignore how difficult life can be for those who live each day with the realities I describe above.
For all these reasons I pledge to continue to work for racial and economic justice for as long as I can. And I call for all right minded Americans to do the same. Please join me as we walk with the likes of Martin Luther King, and Abraham Lincoln, towards a better future of true justice and freedom for ALL people of every race.
