Costa Rica Boundary Argument With Nicaragua Blamed On Google Maps

Where the San Juan River divides Costa Rica and Nicaragua lies an island that is the source of a historic boundary argument. Nicaragua turned the anxiety up a notch last week when one of its army commanders led an incursion into Costa Rica. Google found itself found within the middle of the dispute when it had been blamed by Nicaragua for an inaccurate representation of the boundary in Google Maps.

Border incursion in Nicaragua held responsible on Google Maps

Google Maps made an error causing Nicaraguan and Costa Rican security forces with lots of weapons to stand off across the San Juan River against each other. A variety of Nicaraguan military troops were moved into an area along the boundary of Costa Rica by Commander Eden Pastora who used Google Maps. Costa Rica accused Pastora of setting up camp, removing a Costa Rican flag, raising the Nicaraguan flag, dredging the San Juan River and dumping sediment in Costa Rican territory. La Nacion, Costa Rica’s largest newspaper, said Pastora used Google Maps to justify the incursion even though official maps used by both nations show the disputed area is Costa Rican territory.

Chinchilla and Sandinistas both fault other people

The Nicaraguan army was said to have been doing an act of aggression by president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, who said this to the whole nation beginning the issues in between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Intensely armed military police were sent to the uninhabited river island by her. About 18 miles inland from the Caribbean Sea is where the disputed territory is. Costa Rica was said to have been invading territory too by the Nicaraguan Sandinista govt. Costa Rica had been said to be threatening Nicaragua in a Chinchilla national address that President Daniel Ortega responded with.

Google in trouble

The mistake Google made has brought on a Costa Rica/Nicaragua boundary dispute. It admits to making the mistake too. The company said the border on Google Maps was off by up to 2.7 kilometers due to an error in data obtained by the State Department. Last week Costa Rica spoke with Google. It asked the island be shown to belong to Nicaragua on the map. Not to be outdone, Nicaragua’s foreign ministry wrote Google the following day telling the business the map is fine just the way it’s.
