Ronnie James Dio Dies At 67
Ronnie James Dio died recently at the age of 67. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2009. He was a legend of hard rock and heavy metal music. He had previously been the lead singer of Black Sabbath and Rainbow and achieved success with his solo efforts. This year has taken it’s toll on metal, as Peter Steele of Type O Negative.
Ronnie James Dio
Ronnie James Dio was born Ronald James Padovona in 1942 in the state of New Hampshire. During his school years, he played brass instruments, which he attributed his powerful vocal technique to. He formed the band Elf in the early 70s, after more than a decade of grinding out a living around New England. The band was discovered by Deep Purple, who took hired Elf numerous times as an opening act.
Rainbow
Ritchie Blackmore hired Elf, including Ronnie James Dio, as the rest of what would be called Rainbow, after he quit Deep Purple. Beyond his musical contributions, he has been credited as popularizing the “metal horns” or “devil horns” which he actually picked up from his grandmother, an Italian immigrant. The term for the gesture is “malocchio,” and became “the horns.” {It was adopted as the sign of The Metal}.
Black Sabbath
Dio left Rainbow after having creative differences with Ritchie Blackmore, and auditioned for Black Sabbath as they had fired Ozzy Osbourne recently at the time. Ronnie James Dio was in almost immediately, and the results were the two albums “Heaven and Hell” and “Mob Rules.” Despite the firing of the iconic original singer, the albums were quite successful. However, Dio began having creative differences with his new band and after the release of the live record “Live Evil” set out on his own.
Holy Diver
Ronnie James Dio assembled a band for a solo record, which was called “Holy Diver,” long considered a classic. The title track and “Rainbow in the Dark” both were fan favorites and radio hits. He reunited with Black Sabbath briefly and recorded the album “Dehumanizer,” and continued releasing solo albums until 2006.
Heaven and Hell
Ronnie James Dio and Black Sabbath crossed paths once again, while Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t working with the band. It was decided they would work under a different name to avoid potential conflicts. Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice would instead tour as Heaven and Hell, recording a live album and in 2009, released “The Devil you Know,” a brand new studio album. The band went on hiatus when Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2009. On the Dio website on May 16, 2010, his wife announced that he had passed away. Ronnie James Dio will be sorely missed as one of the greats of the last 30 years, a man of myth and legend.
