Modern Art Illusion
Please define in your own words what is abstraction?
Abstraction is not a concept or formal approach limited to the modern world. Most of the early artifacts of human history reveal specific distortions in relation to the human body, spatial illusion, and function of pictorial images. Please define in your own words what is abstraction? Then, discuss how the Prehistoric and ANE cultures of the Mediterranean use abstraction in their art and architecture. Does the work you examine suggest any qualities that don’t fit into your definition of abstraction?
To me, ‘abstraction’ is the process where you look at a real situation, and then ‘take out’ the part of it that is important to you, and amplify, concentrate on or emphasize just that part.
For example, if you were looking at the solar system but were interested only in orbits, and not in how the sun works or whether there is life on earth, you would ‘abstract out’ just the idea of small masses that are gravitationally bound to a much larger one.
With regard to ancient art, I think you can consider the ‘venus’ figures. Fertility was extremely important to ancient cultures, and so when they look at a woman, and want to represent her in art, they might concentrate on the elements that relate to her fertility (breasts, hips) and not on the things that are not relevant to it (her feet, face).
That is just an example, but you can see how they are not trying to represent a particular real figure or situation, but to ‘abstract out’ the elements that are important to them, and that they wish to emphasize to the viewer, or to themselves.
