History
In 1993, two writers who were opening a hip-hop store in Barcelona, Spain, contacted a paint company inquiring about prices of their paint. The commercial manager there, Jordi, heard the idea of manufacturing paint for graffiti artists, and was willing to act on it. The manager, however, was unable to convince the company of the idea’s profitability. Thus, Jordi and the writers worked together to create an ideal paint for artists. In 1994, an event called “Aerosol Art” became the place in which the first Montana Colors aerosol spray was unveiled to the public. Soon after the “Hardcore” 400mL can was also unveiled, a common product today. Then in 2001, the “Alien” cans debuted. These were smaller, lower pressure cans that came in a wide variety of colors.
While two brands exist under the “Montana” name, Montana Spain (MTN Colors now) was the original brand. Some point after Montana Spain was becoming more successful Motip Dupli approached the Spanish manufacturer to buy out the company. When Montana Spain declined, Motip Dupli used the name Montana to start its own line of graffiti-related spray paint. Mock cans of Spanish Montana Hardcore have been found; made by the German company. The German Montana (Montana Cans) also began an advertising campaign disparaging the Spanish Montana, in part claiming that Spanish Montana was more harmful to its customers/users than German Montana. To this day both Montanas exist and proceed in court cases over the name. Many writers in the graffiti community do not support the German Montana company for their actions. Both[Spanish] MTN Colors and [German] Montana Cans are popular; Spanish Montana more-so for their Hardcore, Alien Art Concepts, and 94 lines, and German Montana more-so for their Black and Gold lines.
Today
All cans are hand-made at the Montana Colors factory. Montana distributes to many countries around the world, despite being a small company of about 50 employees.
