What is the best website to sell paintings on?
I have some original acrylic, oil, mixed media, and etc paintings that I want to sell. What website would you recommend that I sell them on? Also, how much do you think the average person would be willing to pay for a painting? Keep in mind that I am hoping to make a living off this art, and in some cases they took months to complete, but I don’t want to charge hundreds of dollars because that’s ridiculous. Thanks.
its not ridiculous to charge hundreds of dollars for paintings especially if they took months. painting is a skilled trade that not anyone can do. but as a basic example of why its not unreasonable to charge a couple hundred dollars here is an example. 7.25 is the national minimum wage at the moment, thats a wage for unskilled labor. its not unreasonable to spend 60 hours on a painting especially if your working on it for months. $7.25 x 60 hours = $435. so even if you are not formally trained in art it is not unreasonable to ask for a couple hundred for a long involved painting.
i don’t believe art should be priced with a formula but its worth keeping that in mind when you do price your work. in the end its what you feel comfortable with letting it go for.
as far as where to sell works the best place to sell would probably be a local gallery. most towns have galleries that will take in any local artists. just be sure to show your work in a professional way.
as far as online galleries to sell your work i have heard of some people having success with ebay. i have heard of some people having success on etsy as well. etsy charges a fee each month to have the the work up on there site. i have also heard that once the recession hit that business died over there. the last online place i will mention is craigslist. i am hesitant to mention it because its such a weird place to sell art but people do it and it works.
the problem with online galleries is that art buying is an emotional experience and with a computer as a mediator you are more detached from the work.
