Not Just For Men: Medical Careers Are Viable Options For Both Sexes
Recent studies reveal that more American women are getting into the medical profession than ever before, a move that could bring drastic changes to the practice as a whole. For the last several years, men have outnumbered women in medical schools by a huge margin. As of late, however, more women are applying to medical schools than ever before. The first reason is that feminism has altered the perception that people have, females in particular, of jobs that should be done by females. The field of engineering, medicine, and law are all seeing increases in women in the field. These changes have increased the pressure on top medical schools to accept more female applicants, giving men some competition. Antidiscrimination laws have changed the way things are done everywhere, even if they have been slow about doing things properly.
You won’t find any recent data available for a dropout rate among female medical school students. In the past data showed that there were more women dropping out of medical school than men. However, their reasons for dropping out had nothing to do with academics. Women who are currently in the medical field assume the dropout rate is probably equal these days among men and women because their numbers have went from being a minority to being a much larger minority than they were. As more women get into the medical profession, a lot of the old traditions that were either somewhat or blatantly discriminatory to them are ceasing to exist.
As example, there is a story of a lecturer in a medical school telling a joke to his predominantly male class in order to loosen them up. “Which of these items doesn’t belong? An egg, sex, woman, or rug” When the class didn’t know, he explained, “It’s sex. Because you can’t beat sex.” Even though this isn’t half as bad as some of the things women were putting up with on an everyday basis in the hallway of schools, it is still bad enough to keep women from being respected. Unfortunately, it’s not just sexual or insulting humor that is a problem for many women in medical school, that could at least be dealt with, it’s the double-standard rules that women are faced with such as a recent student who was not allowed to observe an exam of a male patient during class due to his genitals being exposed. Close by in another classroom, the lady’s husband was allowed to perform a pelvic exam of a female patient. Besides the humiliation of this treatment, it’s only women who are asked about how they will balance career and family during their admissions interviews. No one asks male students. Women also had the hardships to contend with like lack of female faculty members to go to in times of need, as well as going up against the long believed notion that women were not capable of being trusted to practice medicine effectively, especially in certain specialty medicines or surgical procedures.
When it comes to the admissions questions about marriage and career choices, it has been said that women were denied according to their answers, and that they couldn’t give a correct answer to the questions, even though this has been denied by a female faculty member. There are cases where the female interviewee couldn’t answer the question correctly no matter what she said. So if the woman says she plans to have someone take care of her children, the interviewer will feel that her real job is to raise her children. If she says she’s going to have children and stay home, the interviewer claims she lacks commitment to the medical field.
In more and more interview sessions, it became obvious that the perception is that female physicians are not as objective as male physicians. Many people feel that this is just another stereotype. However, many medical students and hospital staff will tell you that there are some very tough women and some really sensitive men working in the medical field, so that stereotype doesn’t really hold true these days.
It has been said by some prominent figures that women have traits about them that bring something more to the medical field. It is believed that women in general are raised to be more open and sensitive, and this can bring something refreshing to the world of medicine. On the other hand, many men who grow up learning aggression from their fathers can be a big problem, however neither generalization is a guarantee in either sex.
