Taking A Fine Horse Photo
Posing may be a problem for even the most veteran horse. Only one lady equestrian photographer from Pasadena, California, can do the impossible, and her photos find their way to the homes of many celebrities. At Pasadena City College (PCC), she borrowed her first camera, and now her motor home office travels all over the state to cover events, and she even had the privilege of shooting British Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics. She graduated from Pasadena High School and then took photography classes at PCC, for which practicing on horses was the most practical. The Eaton Canyon Riding Stables were like a second home to her since she was 10 years old. The stables were her practice grounds on weekends, where she used her borrowed camera for assignments. Her hobby transformed into a full-out career after her first photo sold, and she left behind music, art, and journalism.
She learned to focus and pose horses by following a famous pair around the country, after she was hired as an assistant at a Santa Barbara horse show. Her second job was with another photographer pair and involved only shows in California. Her Swedish camera with German lens is her tools nowadays, and her mother handles business.
With six-foot jumps, close races, and other active moments, she captures perfect moments. However, she also has a knack for getting horses on all fours to pose. There are also horses who love being in front of the camera. These are the horses that perk their ears or raise their heads after discovering a camera is focused on them. Random shots seldom end in good pictures. When it comes to hunters and jumpers, people expect shots taken mid-air, when their legs are folded at just the right angle. Tennessee walkers pictured at their best have high action with their front hoofs and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. A stock horse should be caught stopping in a slide, and a saddle horse should be caught with legs and head held high. For her photos of the Peruvian Paso, an endangered South American species that many are struggling to save, she has received due credit. When their forelegs roll toward the outside, the time has come to take a shot. Their own beauty with the elaborateness of the riders uniform makes them rich material for photographers.
She has met many a celebrity horse enthusiast through her work. Photography has brought her face to face with royalty. At the Montreal Olympics, she stood next to the Queen while snapping photos of Princess Anne. The Queen said she always feels nervous every time her daughter would attempt a high jump. At some point she felt she could do with some variety and tried photographing fork lifts, in addition to her spare time activities, like swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even horse riding.
She didn’t have to worry about the fork lift perking its ears.
