The Lost History of Spain’s Most Popular Music and Dance Form
Music is a main type of art that uses sound as its medium; elements of music are pitch, melody, harmony, tempo and rhythm. Music plays an important role in many country’s culture; it has been used for entertainment, religious expression, and a lot more.
Spain’s history is rich, and as expected music plays a big part in it; the Roman culture was its main influence for hundreds of years which introduced Ancient Greek music. Then the Visigoths, an East Germanic tribe also came, as well as the Jews, and also the Moors came; these greatly influenced and influenced Spain’s musical style and form. When one considers Spanish music, one cannot help but think about Flamenco because it is, without a doubt, one of the most popular dance forms that came from Spain. Contrary to popular belief, Flamenco is only popular to one of Spain’s regions; it began from Andalusia, an autonomous community in Spain and is seen as the second most massive in terms of land area in the country. Because Spain’s music has been influenced by different countries, their music is dissimilar from region to region.
Flamenco originated from the Andalusian regions and compared to what is believed in this generation, it used to be only popular in the Andalusian regions and nowhere else in Spain. It is music that started in Andalusia which is famous for its complicated and rapid passages, and the dance is characterized by its audible footwork. Flamenco also characterizes the intricate music and culture of Spain; however, studies exploring the origins of Flamenco until today have inconclusive findings.
It was a hard time during the early centuries and there are numerous biases against Gypsies during that time which was considered to make up the poor people in Andalusia and which may have had a big influence in the roots of Flamenco. Studies also shows that there’s a connection of gypsy dance culture and the descendants of Moorish music in the 8th century until 17th century in the ancestry of Flamenco; still many also believe that apart from gypsy dance and Moorish music, there is also influence of music from Egypt, India, and the Byzantine church which played a big part in creating this art form. During the period when Flamenco first became a music and dance form in Spain, Gypsies had a bad reputation all over the world; Spain was no exception in that during those times, Gypsies were persecuted and marginalized. Another reason for difficulties in determining the origin of Flamenco is that the lower class people have no education and cannot write and they just kept the music through oral traditions; worst of all, the Jews, Muslims and Gitanos, which make up the lower class, were being killed throughout the period of Spanish Inquisition.
Even though much of the Flamenco’s ancestry is kept unknown and the art form itself has transformed through the being passed on by oral tradition, it’s still quite an influential music and dance technique. So much so that until the present generation, many people is trying to acquire more information and do this musical and dance style all over the world.
