Grammar question about Earth Hour poster spotted in Chicago?
“Turn your lights off for earth hour. We are.” Is this grammatically correct? Would “we will” be more proper?
I think you’re correct. In the second statement, “We are”, “are” is an adverb intended to refer to the verb in the first sentence, which was “Turn”. But “are turn” would be wrong. “Are” is present or future tense, but “turn” is past. Had the sentence read “Are you going to turn your lights off for earth hour?” or “Turning your lights off for earth hour?”, then “We are” would have been right.
Then again, “will” could be argued against as well. “Turn your lights off for earth hour. We will.” implies that they’ll turn your lights off for you. Maybe they should also change “your” to “the” as in “Turn the lights off for earth hour. We will.”, or better yet, drop the second sentence altogether.
By the way, when the heck is “earth hour”?
