A Short Overview On Graphic Design
Pattern, shape, design and color are all elements that graphic designers of the 19th century took into consideration in their work. Oscar Wilde advocated and patronized an assortment of artistic movements, methods and styles. He deeply regarded the practice of art as an end unto itself. He felt that assessing art by ethical or standards was a misguided notion. He quickly became a polemical and substantial literary presence and remained so during his brief life. One of Wilde’s most peculiar and controversial stories was illustrated, at his request, by this young man of whom we have been speaking. The tale was illustrated in fantastical patterns, sweeping lines, and eroticism somewhat threaterning in its design.
There is an incredibly dramatic interplay between white and black that characterizes his work. He used wide borders and planes or shadows which contrasted with the delicate patterns etched upon a white surface. Beardsley tended towards asymmetrical composition whose movements were depicted through long, curving lines. His characters in the illustrations remain simple outlines, and yet the items that they contain, such as their clothing or hair, are usually complicated. The power of his art was created by the interweaving of simple elegance and complicated precision.
Imports from Japan stimulated and aroused designers toward 19th century’s end. This coupled with a rejuvenated interest in early Renaissance decoration and medieval arts exhilarated artists of the time period and reinvigorated the entire art world. The young illustrator’s work was published in several famous periodicals, and became the source from which other artists copied him, both in Europe and the United States. The late 19th century also saw the development of the poster from a medium used in commercial advertising to an art form in its own right. Posters were some of the first things to be printed in color, all of the books still being printed in black and white. The poster design leader concentrated on a single, big, brightly colored, image that caught the viewers’ eyes. What text appeared on posters was as succinct as possible. The words were printed to discuss whatever occasion or product the poster was designed for. He knew that the audience’s attention was more easily attracted to simplicity so he used vivid colors and flat, basic shapes. As in an Impressionist painting, his lines were somewhat fractured and hesitant in appearance. Tbis artist’s work is therefore widely known as the precursor to the true art nouveau poster aesthetic.
Another artist known for bolder lines and more flowing curves is considered as the father of the prototypical art nouveau poster. His is the familiar work seen full of willowy, young girls wearing loose clothing and letting their hair flow down from their heads, which then moves out into further artistic shapes. An additional renowned art nouveau poster artist’s creations were invariably characterized by sleek, thin proportions which included a full-body rendering of a woman. There are a variety of sources these complicated and intricate patterns draw from, including Hebrew lettering as well as fold art, Moorish and Arab decoration, Japanese wood cuts, Byzantine mosaics, and Celtic motifs.
The elegant art of these early graphic designers can be viewed via the many books and reprints of their work.
