Teach Your Children Well: Online Sources To Teach Kids Current Events And History
Because school budgets are cut every year, in many cases it’s the parents’ responsibility to ensure their children have well-rounded educations. Fortunately, the Web is full of educational materials — if you know how to search for them. And because kids are so hip, going online to learn wouldn’t be at all unfamiliar for them. I used to watch my 4-year-old nephew click around YouTube looking for Cape Kennedy launch videos and tornado pictures, so older children should have no problem.
There are plenty of opportunities for learning in odd places, such as in the world of vintage art. Digitized antique advertising, postcards, greeting cards, posters and other ephemera contain historical information that’s quite revealing. The following vintage images are great examples of online materials that can be used for teaching:
Vintage Travel Art
Children will enjoy learning about their world if you expose them to free vintage travel posters. These walks down memory lane not only teach about the destinations, but how different cultures were represented in advertising.
Tall Sailing Ships Photos and Paintings
There’s plenty of interesting information to be found if kids study tall ships. From pirate and slave ships, to Orient clippers and multi-masted, ocean-going vessels, there are interesting details bound to catch any child’s imagination.
Vintage American Icons Postcards
There were a number of postcards printed that featured American presidents, statesmen and even strong female role models. As a matter of fact, these were all the rage. From pictures of George Washington to greeting cards with images of John Adams and Betsy Ross to fictional heroes such as Uncle Sam, the online world is filled with these vintage pictorial references. Many tell stories along with the pictures, making them a great source of mini history lessons.
Colonel Stoopnagle’s Spoonerisms
Spoonerisms originated in the early- to mid-20th Century, created by Reverend W.A. Spooner and made famous by radio comedian F. Chase Taylor, who perfromed under the name of Colonel Lemuel Q. Stoopnagle. These twisted tales swap the first letter or phonetic sound of one word with the next word or a word that falls a few words away. Authentic examples from Spooner himself include “fighting a liar” for “lighting a fire” and “cattle ships and bruisers” for “battleships and cruisers”. Besides being entertaining, these mangled mash-ups also teach children to play with language.
Victorian Fashion Plates
Studying fashion doesn’t have to be frivolous or just for kids who want to become designers, if it reveals a piece of history. Looking at Victorian era fashions will show kids just how much things have changed since the nineteenth century. With any luck, they’ll be able to see how lucky they are to be born at a time when they can dress comfortably!
And Don’t Forget Current Events!
But history isn’t the only place you’ll find teaching topics on the Internet. You just have to make sure the materials, or at least your presentation of them, is impartial. As an example, many parents don’t agree with President Barack Obama’s policies. But that doesn’t mean they can’t use Barack Obama election clip art, free President Barack Obama photos or even free Michelle Obama paper dolls to create lesson plans. As a matter of fact, I know personally of a homeschooling mom who accessed all three to make a large, interactive tally board for her children during the last presidential election. It wasn’t about her political views, As a result or her impartial way of conveying the information. Due to her neutral presentation, she gave them the gift of information that will help them make up their own minds.
Remember, kids are like sponges, so you want to make sure they get balanced information. That emphasis on fairness will bear sweeter fruit for them later in their lives. You never know, one of the children you’re teaching could be the president some day!
