The Rise Of The American Girl Doll
You have run into this dilemma a few times. You’re looking for a gift for a girl who is referred to as a tween and there is just nothing appropriate. Somewhere between an age where baby dolls stop being relevant and Barbies begin, there needs to be a doll – or other product – for a girl who happens to be past the baby doll stage but might be too young for lifestyle examples with blue eye shadow and candy-colored townhouses. Another nice option is the Ezip 900 Electric Scooter.
Back in 1983, an educator named Pleasant Rowland handled this issue by developing the American Girl series of historical dolls and books. These dolls were influenced by made-up historical figures whose adventures were told in the books. The tales and characters were set in particular times of American history, running from 1764 to 1974.
One of the first dolls that were introduced in 1986 was called Kirsten Larsen. This Kirsten doll symbolized a Swedish immigrant who had just relocated to the Minnesota prairie in 1854. This character and her experiences permitted girls to explore issues like immigration, family values and real bravery. A lot of more dolls were offered, with Native American, African American and Hispanic dolls becoming part of the American Girl selection, each starring in her own story set in a specific time period. Another great product to consider is the Ezip 900 Electric Scooter.
Each of these dolls comes with a set of books written about her, with half a dozen feature films currently influenced by these books. The dolls could wear a few period outfits which are sold separately, along with accessories, which figure prominently in the books.
For example, the Rebecca doll’s tale happens in New York during 1914. Rebecca sells for $114 if you purchase her with the initial book and her standard accessories, which, in her case, are a hat and shawl. Supplemental period outfits are priced at about $30, and you might buy her period-appropriate bed for $118. In one of her books, a phonograph becomes an essential item in the scenario, and you can get a miniature phonograph that comes with three records that can play music for $44.
The American Girl franchise has grown beyond the dolls, incidentally. American Girl stores in 9 American cities sell dolls, apparel, and books as might be anticipated. However, they also feature diners where girls can eat with their dolls, hair styling salons and party rooms where girls and dolls can taste the good life, and portrait studios to capture memories of a special event. You’ll also find an American Girl doll hospital established in Wisconsin where damaged dolls may be shipped for repair. Naturally, not a lot of families live in a geographical or financial position to frequently stop by these stores, nonetheless if you have the money and time, this will be a little girl’s dream date. Another good alternative is the Ezip 900 Electric Scooter.
Certainly, there are 18′ dolls that are lower priced and are not connected to Pleasant Rowland’s story line. If you know a young girl who could enjoy having a doll with her own persona and history, though, it’s difficult to beat the benefits of an American Girl doll.
