Blink 182- The Kings Of Punk Return
There’s only one name on everyone’s mind when the question of pop punk music merch dominance comes up. Only Blink 182 can claim to take the top spot in the genre in the US and internationally. There is no question that the band is among the few real outstanding artists among a sea of obvious posers, copycats and wannabes.
In fact, such is Blink 182′s dominance that it is widely recognized as one of the key pioneers in the genre that it is now cited by many contemporary bands as their great musical influence. And they have the album sales and awards to prove it.
Outstanding Discography
Blink 182 has been an extremely active band. They currently have twenty-one singles and three extended plays. They also have four video albums, five studio albums and one compilation. Their music first saw the light of day in 1994 with Cheshire Cat when the band first came together as a group. This initial release did not meet with success but it gave the band its first shot at establishing a long career. In 1997, Dude Ranch came out with better success.
It was Enema of the State that gave the band its first major break, debuting in Billboard’s top ten. “All the Small Things” which was part of the album became a sensation and took the number one spot in the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, released in 2001, is the only number 1 Blink 182 album in the United States as of this writing. The band’s self-titled album, peaked at number 3 in the Billboard 200 when it was released in 2003. For many critics and fans, this is the band’s most defining album to date.
A sixth album is in the works for 2010 adding to the Blink 182 discography. It can be modestly said that the music scene awaits the latest collaboration between the band members of this popular band, which has sold over 25 million albums globally.
Constancy in Composition
Bassist Mark Hoppus and guitarist Tom DeLonge are the group’s vocalists and songwriters. They are the original 1994 members of Blink 182. Drummer Scott Raynor however who originally handled drums for the group left in 1998. Today, Travis Barker is on the drummer’s seat and shares the spotlight with the band’s two other members.
Like many other successful groups, the members of Blink 182 are said to share a strong and solid working and personal connection. This is perhaps their secret to the numerous awards that they’ve received. Among their many nominations and awards are:
• Teen Choice Awards – Choice Rock Group (2000), Best Rock Group (2001) and Choice Love Song (2004) for “I Miss You”
• MTV Video Music Awards – Best Group Video (2000) for “All the Small Things” in addition to other nominations for Video of the Year and best Pop Video
• MTV Europe- Best New Act (2000) and Best Rock Act (2001)
Blink 182 is the true pop punk leader. They have also been credited for being top players in the similar genres of skate punk, punk rock and punk revival. Whatever their music is called, it is clear that they have come to influence modern culture. No fan will be taking down their band posters for years.
