Acquiring a Better Perception of Flamenco as a Cultural Performance
Music is a primary form of art that uses sound as its method; components of music are pitch, melody, harmony, tempo and rhythm. Music has a wide spectrum of uses from signaling the start of war to ushering a man and a woman into marriage.
Music served a large role in every country’s history; for hundreds of years the Roman culture and Greek influences reigned Spanish music. Other than the Romans, the Visigoths also dismounted, an East Germanic tribe, then after them came the Jews, then came after were the Moors; these series of events led to the different influences on Spain and its culture and music that made Spain’s musical style and forms extraordinary. To deeply appreciate and know more about Spain’s music and culture, you simply must visit Spain and learn its language and the most useful method to do that is through online and taking advantage of websites like Rocket Spanish which offers lessons in Spanish language and lessons in Spanish culture. Rocket Spanish or Bust is a Computer Assisted Language Learning that can help you speak Spanish fluently.
When one considers Spanish music, one cannot help but think about Flamenco because it is, without thinking twice, one of the most known dance forms that came from Spain. Contrary to popular belief, it is only famous to one region in Spain which Is believed to be Andalusia, an autonomous community which is believed to be secode most massive in terms of land area in the country. Flamenco was not a music or dance style that was massively famous or even accustomed in Spain.
A famous music that is extracted from Spain is Flamenco, which many people believed to be a common music in Spain. During the time when Flamenco first became known in the Andalusian regions, that region was the poorest and one of the most neglected regions in Spain. Flamenco also captured the intricate music and culture of Spain; still, finding the main origin of Flamenco remains a mystery until today.
The reason why Flamenco’s ancestry is still very much unknown is that the region where it came from was one of the poorest regions in Spain that time; not only that, the dance style of Flamenco was thought to be heavily influenced by Gypsy music. Studies also presents that there is a link between gypsy dance culture and the descendants of Moorish music in the 8th century until 17th century in the history of Flamenco; still many also believe that apart from gypsy dance and Moorish music, there is also influence of music from Egypt, India, and the Byzantine church which played a big part in influencing this art form. It is also quite unfortunate that since Flamenco came from what was then classified as the lower class society, historians and government officials of Spain found no significance to record and preserve the tradition of that cultural class that started and supported the Flamenco. Another reason for the hindrances in learning the ancestry of Flamenco is that the lower class people have no education and cannot write and they just passed on the music through oral traditions; worst of all, the Jews, Muslims and Gitanos, which make up the lower class, were being persecuted throughout the period of Spanish Inquisition.
Researchers, historians and experts are still discussing and researching to know the exact history and origin of Flamenco; how Flamenco got its name is still unclear. In fact, it did not just remain in history but it became famous and really developed into a widely studied music and dance technique until today.
