Posters: a Mighty Medium of Publicity
Poster is a printed paper of rather large size that could be affixed on a wall or other preferably vertical surface. Posters may have both textual and graphical content together as well as they may have separate textual or graphical content. Posters are nowadays an important means of advertising and publicity. Posters carry the informations about any event, election, health programs, movies, protests and products etc.
There are several other significant uses of posters. Reproduction of famous art works is also carried on in posters. There are educational posters too that convey many important messages to the public. Posters have got huge significance for political groups. They help in projecting the right image of the political leaders and the agendas of various political parties. The catchy lines of the posters attract the viewers and the purpose is solved when people see them. Political posters are said to be originated in the First World War and they were effectively used in Second World War.
People take the help of posters to lodge any kind of protest. These posters support the voices of the protesters in visual way. The general type of posters are also many like comic book posters, event posters, boxing posters, concert posters, educational posters, classroom posters, fan poster, affirmation poster, music posters
For product advertisement, posters have been in vogue since very long time. After the invention of printer and the development of cheap printing technique, poster printing started on a big scale. The term “poster art” was coined in 1880’s when, Europe was stung by the cheap and easy printing technology. Many noted artists inclined towards poster art during that time. The popularity level of posters reached high levels at that time and a grand exhibition was organized at Paris in 1884 to mark the fame of posters.
Some people harbor the hobby of collecting posters. Posters belonging to some historic event or movement attach great worth to them and they are sought after by many admirers. Conventionally, the popular size of the posters is 24 by 36 inches. The posters smaller in sizes are called handbills or flyers.
