Four wheeled stars of the silver screen
Many of the films we see at the cinema will have a big Hollywood star’s name emblazoned on the poster, for many people this is what draws them in to see the film – their favourite actor.
The thing is that sometimes some film stars can be upstaged by a member of the supporting cast; even quirkier is that sometimes this supporting star is a car! Many films have become famous for the car that featured in the film or in some cases made a little known car famous over night.
One such instance of this has to be the DeLorean DMC-12 from the film “Back to the Future”. The DeLorean was an Irish made luxurious car that didn’t sell very well back in the 1980s, and its body work was constructed of stainless steel also. In the film the DMC-12 played the role of the time machine and became an iconic 80’s car.
The 1968 V8 Ford Mustang is easily recognisable as Steve McQueen’s ride in the 1968 crime thriller Bullitt. A film more famed for its impressive car chase than any other car chase on film.
Another iconic car is the Mini Cooper S; first seen in the Italian Job where Michael Caine and his gold heist gang used the Mini Cooper S to get away with the gold. The film was remade in 2003 with a new cast as well as the new BMW Mini Cooper S taking centre stage.
Modern films are no stranger to boosting a car’s profile, none more so than the Fast and Furious franchise. Many Japanese exotic and American muscles cars such as the Nissan Skyline GTR and Dodge Charger have featured in the supercharged illegal races central to the film.
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen features cars that turn into alien robots, one of which is the latest iteration of the Chevrolet Camero; the yellow Camero named “Bumblebee” is one of the key robot characters, protecting one of the main – human – characters.
Over the years cars have featured heavily in movies, whether they are centred on cars and driving or not. Almost all action movies involve some form of car chase and it’s clear why audiences love them so much. Car chases and fast driving are things that are dangerous in real life but can be very entertaining when we see it happen on the big screen!
