Can you identify this rock?
I found this rock at Richmond park yesterday and would like to know what it is! At first glance I thought it looked like volcanic rock, but it is heavier than scoria I have held in the past. It looks also like vesicular basalt to me, but my friend thinks it’s just slag. Going by the weight, and the fact it sinks, I think he’s probably right, but I would love to get some confirmation!
I don’t own scales so sorry I can’t give an accurate weight.

Slag, without shadow of a doubt… Probably from an old iron foundry, or possibly an old gasworks. How did it end up in Richmond Park??? This sort of stuff is usually pretty contaminated in all sorts of toxins – they used to spread it on paths as a surface to stop weeds growing on it.
