Norman Rockwell Prints
Norman Rockwell was inspired by the State of the Union address in 1941 by President Franklin Roosevelt, in which President Roosevelt recalled the four crucial human rights. Norman Rockwell went on to paint the ever-preferred four Freedoms set of 4 paintings inspired by this speech. These four Freedom paintings were called: Freedom from Want, Freedom of Speech, Freedom to Worship and Freedom from Fear.
This series of four Norman Rockwell prints is probably the most famous of his artwork. Many Americans have at least one of the set hanging in their homes today. The four major human rights that affected the Freedom paintings, the subject of the State of the Union address, highlighted the rights that needed to be safe and sound, and helped to remind the U.S. citizens why we were fighting in WWII. The Norman Rockwell Freedom prints is really the major cornerstone of his art collection.
Norman Rockwell is thought to be one of the more well-known contemporary and commercial artists of the 20th century. Often considered more of an illustrator than a first-rate artist, he was not always recognized when he was alive. He was famous, but not always considered a fine artist. The extensive distribution of Norman Rockwell prints are what made him more well known. You can see them yet in Post Offices, schools, clubs, public buildings, etc. They symbolize what American was all about around the time of WWII, depicting middle American.
The feedback at the time of these Norman Rockwell Freedom prints was not entirely positive. Many thought Rockwell was too happy, and he was not thought to be a fine artist. The thinking was that America was portrayed too “all-American”. Rockwell encouraged war efforts during the WWII era by way of his artwork endorsing war bonds, he encouraged women to work, and also encouraging men to enlist in the service. And his subjects constantly highlighted patriotism, family and society.
