Identifying Your Position as a Parent in Your Child’s Recovery from Sexual Abuse
Realizing that their child had been sexually abused is very difficult for parents; it’s the kind of suffering that alters the family either for the good or for the worse. The problem is that sometimes it’s intolerable to guard your child 24 hours a day, seven days a week; there will be times when your child will be vulnerable. Sexually abused children often exhibit precociousness about sex that is not very typical among children their age. Children don’t usually talk vocally what a sexual predator has done to them, so it’s up to parents to search for the signs. - Abiding by all legal actions against the abuser, make sure that your child gets the right kind of support without more ado. Some parents who are not contending better with the trauma themselves have the erroneous idea that children will get better if they don’t talk about what had transpired. It’s never a good idea to jump the gun and simply stun them with this because they have the right to know what will go on in their life.
- Don’t force your child to reintegrate into society immediately after what happened, however, make it a point to reintegrate him or her gradually. It’s very important that your child learn how to recover from the early fear of reintegrating. Getting involved with normal activities and communicating with peer groups could really help your child get back the childhood he or she almost lost.
- Set up pleasing family memories together. You can do this by talking to your family members about what they can do to help, and what they shouldn’t do in addition.
- Make sure that you are present in family meals and that you spend quality time with your kids so that you can explain to them what happened yourself.
- Bring your child out of the danger zone; if the sexual prisoner has, because of some legal technicality, bought time out of jail, do everything to keep your child from being exposed to him or her.
One of the most valuable lessons you can teach your child during these times is to have faith that things will be alright given that you have a positive and hopeful attitude.
