Would you consider comedy a form of art?

My art teacher keeps telling us “Use the art part of your brain DO NOT USE THE SMART PART!” I totally get what he is saying, but what i dont understand is why he wont let the smart part help the art part! So it all comes down to this, i know that the most successful comedians are usually really smart, so they are witty, if comedy is a form art then the ‘smart part’ definitely helps the art part out right?

Comedy is one of the oldest forms of art. The fact that the masks of drama (sad face) and comedy (happy face) are such well known icons proves this. Your teacher is probably trying to get you in touch with the more primal/subconscious side of your artistic sensibilities. We all think it is funny to see someone slip and fall (if they are not badly hurt that is) This is an example of primal humor. Most comedians today do not rely on this form of what is commonly called “slapstick”. Instead, they will often employ more cerebral elements of comedy that do require you to think about the joke. This is an art unto itself.
Even the basic arts of painting, music, sculpture , etc. do require you to use the “smart” part of your brain so I don’t really agree with your teachers assessment, but since I am not in the class and you are, I would simply try to understand where he is coming from.
