Remembering the Works of Diego Velasquez, one of Spain’s Greatest Masters

It’s not a secret that a number of what the would could regard as Spain’s exceptional Masters lived and became popular during the Golden Age where creativity flourished and was encouraged. However, one painter that became most known of them all is Diego Velasquez; he is comsidered as one of the most influential and most admired artist in his own time. King Philip IV and his chief minister are only a few of the powerful friends Velasquez has; he made artworks for the royal family and to people with position and high nobility, showcasing his style and skills in all his works.

Diego Velasquez was brought about from minor nobility on the 5th day of the month of June 1559 in Seville. He displayed some talent in drawing and at the age of eleven, he was given an apprenticeship in the studio of the great Francisco Pacheco who trained him and helped him hone his skills as a painter. He later became the husband of the daughter of Francisco Pacheco and earned money through his paintings, and because of his skill in painting he was able to earn enough money to buy a good house and another house to be rent out.

Diego Velasquez’s career was initiated by impressive and extraordinary paintings, pegging him as one of the country’s most celebrated painters. When he met Marques de Spinola, Velasquez painted a masterpiece called Surrender of Breda which tells the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the piece, he was stricken with awe and amazement and cannot contemplate how brilliant was Velasquez’ skill to express and capture emotions through the realism of his portraits. However, if there is one painting which you can regard to be exceptional and most popular among Diego Velasquez’s pieces, that would be the Las Meninas; it became so determining of his style that until today, it has made its way into the classrooms of different universities worldwide as people study realist paintings.

These are just but a gaze of Spain’s most acclaimed master artist, his works and life is truly an inspiration to many people; he truly is deserves to be called one of the exceptional painter that ever lived.
