Justin Bieber, LED Teeth And Patient Cancellations: A Check-up Of February’s Dental News
A round-up of February 2011’s best dental news – including: why the recession is keeping people from visiting their dentist; how a celebrity tramp acquired some new dental work and why ‘LED teeth’ are lighting up Japan
Bieber goes straight
American teen pop star Justin Bieber has been talking about his struggle to straighten out his teeth. The American hero told Rolling Stone magazine that he has been wearing a set of Invisalign braces on his teeth for the past 12 months.
He said: “The teeth were pointing inwards a little bit so they had to bring them out.”
Recession equals dental cancellations
British patients with financial worries are cancelling much-needed dental appointments.
That is the key discovery of a survey carried out by the British Dental Association (BDA) which suggested that 59 % of dentists have experienced patients cancelling appointments.
Even more worryingly, 68 per cent of dentists have said that patients have delayed treatment.
The BDA thinks that these cancellations and deferrals are the reason that a third of dentists have noted a rise in the cases of people seeking emergency treatment.
In North Carolina, America, a legal dispute about whether tanning salons should be permitted to undertake teeth whitening treatments looks set to carry on. The legal representatives of tanning salons in the state maintain that a dentists’ ‘monopoly’ will force the prices up for patients.
But this month the state’s dentists have retaliated by initiating a new federal court order. If their action succeeds it could mean that only qualified dentists would be permitted to offer this highly-specialised cosmetic treatment. Might this have a repercussions in Britain?
Vampire dental flick
Northamptonshire health authority has uploaded a short film on YouTube which aims to motivate more young people to visit the dentist (40,000 young people in the county haven’t visited the dental surgery in the last two years).
The film is entitled ‘Mouth Wide Open’ and contains a raunchy scene where a vampire’s romantic aspirations are dashed by the halitosis coming from her fangs.
The tramp with the golden voice gets shiny new teeth
The American vagrant who stumbled upon stardom through a YouTube clip is now sporting a gleaming set of sparkling new teeth.
Former radio presenter Ted Williams put 20 years of homelessness and drug addiction behind him when 20million YouTube viewers watched footage of him speaking by a roadside in Ohio. The clip attracted the attention of radio stations and film voiceover agents determined to use a ‘golden’ speaking voice which has to be heard to be believed.
The fame resulting from the clip has given him the money to carry out vital dental work so that he has new teeth to go with his new life.
Japan’s fluorescent-toothed adolescents
Japanese kids have started a trend for wearing LED inserts on their teeth which light up when they smile. The LED teeth can be activated by remote control, a flick of a button changing the colour of the teeth.
There are so far no reports of how this new fashion breakthrough could impair dental health.
