Toshiro Mifune

Greatest Director Ever?
I’m not talking about box office receipts, not the most commercially successful director ever. I’m looking for sustained quality in pictures for at least 30 years. That immediately gets rid of Lucas, as he stopped directing film for 22 years, and Spielberg, and Michael Bay, and James Cameron, and even Akira Kurosawa because hise last 23 years in film he didn’t make a good film. That includes Ran because the colour was washed out, the casting is below what it should be (Toshiro Mifune was available for the lead), and the screenplay is shallow. I’m talking about directors that made good films throughout their careers, and had a point in every film. Who do you think?
Stanley Kubrick…no one else took the the knowledge gained by the counter-culture of the 60′s and used it to put such compelling visions on the screen…no one else had such a view of the world (or universe for that matter: 2001 and it’s concepts on space, God, life cycles, A.I., etc.) as him…just a brilliant person in general and by extension his movies…

Sanjuro [VHS] $10.00 Akira Kurosawa’s sequel to Yojimbo is more lighthearted and less cynical, a rousing adventure with ToshirĂ´ Mifune reprising his role as the scruffy mercenary who becomes an unlikely big brother to a troupe of nine naive samurai. Shuffling into a secret meeting where the proud young men discuss the graft choking their clan, Mifune’s Sanjuro scratches his scraggly beard and distractedly rubs his ne… |

High and Low [VHS] Although best known for his samurai classics, Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa proved himself equally adept at contemporary dramas and thrillers, and 1962′s High and Low offers a powerful showcase for Kurosawa’s versatile skill. The great Toshiro Mifune stars as a wealthy industrialist who has just raised a large sum of money to execute his planned takeover of a successful shoe manufacture… |

Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru [VHS] The Bad Sleep Well tells the story of corruption at the highest levels of Japanese business and its tragic consequences. Though flawed by a tedious introductory sequence and by an ending that seems out of sync with the story, it is a fascinating movie and the middle part is especially exciting. Japanese legend Toshiro Mifune plays Koichi Nishi, the seemingly stoic bridegroom who is trying to get a… |

James Clavell’s Shogun $32.00 What better way to escape from the onslaught of so-called reality television than to sail away with Richard Chamberlain to “the Japans” for a little samurai action and some discreet “pillowing”? From the golden age of the miniseries comes this television benchmark, the 10-hour, Golden Globe-winning saga based on James Clavell’s bestselling epic.
