London’s huge array of famous and notable buildings and landmarks make it an inspiring place for visitors, who enjoy the tales from centuries ago. Of course, the same can be said of its many bridges which span the river Thames, each of which has a fascinating history. Whichever of the London hotels you stay at, it’s a great idea to take a stroll along the Thames and discover some of the city’s bridges, or even zig-zag back and forth across the river.

The most recent of London’s bridges it the pedestrianised Millennium Bridge, built in celebration of the new millennium in 2000. This sleek suspension bridge connects St Paul’s Cathedral to the Tate Modern museum and the design provides an unbeatable perspective of St Paul’s. There are many highly-rated London hotels in the areas at either end of the bridge, so you can take advantage of this pleasant river crossing.

You don’t have to be familiar with London to recognise the famous shape of Tower Bridge, resplendent in gold and blue, its two grand towers connected by a pair of horizontal walkaways. The bridge opened in 1894, and now more than 40,000 people cross the bridge every day. Tower bridge currently houses a fantastic exhibition on its own history and construction, and if you stay at one of the many London hotelsnearby, you can enjoy the beauty of this bridge and learn more about what is surely London’s favourite structure.

Many people have heard of London Bridge but few would be able to recognise it at first glance. With a long list of bridges on this spot over the centuries, London Bridge was still the only bridge in London until 1729. In 1209 London Bridge had tall buildings along each side, as many as seven storeys high, and despite it being too crowded to be truly practical, it stood for 500 years before being demolished. A replacement was built on the same spot in 1831 but structural problems meant it had to be sold – it was purchased by an American entrepreneur and it now stands in the United States. The actual London Bridge which is there now first opened in 1973 and every day many people cross it to get to work in the City of London.
