why did WWII vintage war ships have wooden decks?

I know that modern war ship have some form of metal decks such as steel but why did WWII ships have wooden decks such as teak? On first thought one would think traction on a wet deck but the latest most modern ships have steel decks and they need good traction as well. This is just a curiousity question.

US aircraft carriers had wooden decks, this was done to hold more aircrafts as well as the japanese, however they blew up quite easily. The british used steel decks and they were much stronger, however they did not build a lot of them as they used battleships. The British were so close to europe anyways that they launched from land based air bases. The US provided small escort carriers in the Atlantic to counter subs, but they were also wooden decks. Most surface ships used wooden decks in this era. If the US used steel decks on the carriers, that would of saved more lives, but the American moto is quantity not quality during those days.

By the way, I forgot the main point, during the time of the war, their was metal shortage and wood was a lot easier to produce. If you research this, the US was asking for donations for recycling all metal products for the war effort. This is the primary reason.
