How To Succeed In Art Without Really Trying
Portrait artists have a hard time trying to capture emotions, moods, and moments. One brave, self taught artist from Marion thrives in portraiture. The faces of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends are shown in his biggest montage, which he calls “Faces”. The stills he grabs from videos give him a rich field of faces to paint. The rest are filled with portraits of the lead singer of Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter. He specializes in pencil, graphite, and charcoal. He filled out his palette later with conte crayon and colored pencils. For his first colored pencil drawing, he used his wedding photo, taken with his Japanese wife, who is originally from Kobe. He felt he did a good job of coupling traditional American drawing and Japanese wood block print in the drawing. He used their wedding picture, taken in December 1996 at City Hall, as the main subject and intertwined personal and Japanese symbols.
He could not leave out their three cats, which could not be present at the actual wedding. He turned the face of one of the cats into a mask from Japanese opera, which supposedly wards off evil spirits. In a position of good luck he decided to draw the second cat.
In the drawing, the couple is dressed in kimonos. He decorated his wife with the kikyo flower, which is her matriarchal symbol. The third cat guards a gingko tree, seen behind the blinds outside the room. Longevity is symbolized by the gingko, which the artist thought of drawing after he saw a tree at the University of Iowa. Their first venture as a couple was this 1997 drawing. His wife helped with idea work. She says they truly cherish the drawing. The artist says he would like to expand into landscapes, but he will always add people, as they are his favorite pieces to draw.
Four of his pieces have been published in a book, one of which serves as the cover, but he has not had his own exhibit. Someone on the staff referred his art to the book editor. The artist received an email of commendation by the editor on his technique, unique combination of portraiture and architecture, and expression of complexity with humor. Action heroes and rock stars were his favorite drawings as a child, and he has matured since then. Whatever he wants to draw, he can. He decides what to draw by taking a clean photo in his head and adding or changing things as he sees fit.
