Flights To Johannesburg
The largest airport in South Africa is known as the Johannesburg OR Tambo International. It is also the hub of air transportation for Southern Africa. If you are flying to South Africa, then Jhb OR Tambo is the major airport, unless you made a booking for a flight to the Lanseria airport.
JHB International, now known as OR Tambo, presently carries approximately 20 million passengers annually and accounts for roughly half the air-traffic that comes and goes out of South Africa.
It’s tough to even think that the lively Johannesburg of today was once a shanty tiny town packed with miners dreaming of diamond. Johannesburg is not only the biggest and the busiest trade centre of South Africa; it is also an excellent tourist travel destination.
Gold Reef City lets you take a sneak peep into the yesteryears of Johannesburg. Here, you are allowed to visit the mineshaft as and also the more contemporary modes of entertainment. To delve into the heritage of the area, visit the Lesedi Cultural Village, which is a mixed group consisting of Basotho, Xhosa, Zulu, and Pedi people. This visit can really be a great experience as you learn about their history and culture; and see then dance.
Tourist mostly head for sites like the Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum, former home of Soweto and Nelson Mandela, and the Regina Mundi Church. In between your sightseeing trips, don’t miss catching a quick drink at any “shebeen”. The most popular of these is known as the Wandie’s Place.
The Johannesburg Zoo houses its animals without the use of bars and has gone to great lengths to reproduce the animals’ natural habitats. This is a good alternative if you can’t go to a proper nature reserve. While you are in the vicinity you could also rent a rowboat and spend a bit of time on Zoo Lake to do a bit of bird watching, and if you feel a little peckish at the end of the day, pop in at Moyo’s for the best African cuisine accompanied by the best African music that this city has to offer.
The Cradle of Humankind, one of World’s Heritage sites is situated just an hour’s drive from the city. It is yet another important place to see. Another attraction is the Sterkfontein Caves where in 1947, Mrs. Ples, a 3 million year-old skull was originally discovered.
Johannesburg is a haven for the shoppers. It offers exciting shopping experiences. There are stylish malls like Sandton City, Hyde Park, and Nelson Mandela Square; and on the other hand a wide variety of lively African flea markets. Most travellers just can’t go without purchasing some striking arts and crafts, available for sale at the markets. Some of such articles are traditional carvings, local wire-work, bead work, and fertility dolls.
The city specializes in food and wine. The local cuisine is highly influenced by the cultures of this place. You can get anything from Malaysian, Creole, African, Indian, French, Mexican, Italian, and Moroccan. Ensure that you have enough time at hand while visiting Johannesburg, so that you can explore all that this amazing city offers to tourists.

The Wind and the Lion $5.75 The up-and-down career of director John Milius had no finer moment than The Wind and the Lion, a dandy adventure tale. It’s based on fact: An American (played by Candice Bergen) and her two children were kidnapped in 1904 Morocco by a Berber tribe, an international incident settled by President Theodore Roosevelt’s “big stick” military muscle. The film’s sweep and swagger are unabashedly old-fashi… |

Chaka (African Writers) $10.36 This novel is the first of many works of literature that takes the great Zulu leader, king, and emperor as its subject. The story is well-known, partly due to Mofolo but also to the works of literature by Badian, Senghor, and Mazisi Kunene. O.R. Dathorne has said, “The historical Chaka is only the impetus for Mofolo’s psychological study of the nature of repudiation.” Mofolo presents it as a study… |
